End of Life Doula
To guide, encourage & companion.
To guide, encourage & companion.
With an aim to honour & embrace the delicate moments surrounding a life-limiting illness, a Doula can be a companion through the unknown. An intentional presence that brings connection & respite for those who are vulnerable, a witness to the moments of self reflection, love & suffering. With resources & knowledge obtained, a Doula can offer a judgement & medical free perspective after all other treatments have paused. We can be a safe space for emotional healing & compassionate listening, as well as a guide to empowerment & meaning. End of Life Doula’s are not just for those nearing death, we can show up in many ways for those who are experiencing the loss of a child, partner, friends & extended whānau.
As there are many layers to the scope of support offered, we encourage, not only those with a life-limiting illness, but anyone wanting to create clarity & ease, to utilise the resources an End of Life Doula has on hand. Whether it's creating an end of life guide, such as End Notes, gathering keepsakes for legacy projects & even letters of reflection or peace, an End of Life Doula can be a grounding presence that nurtures & encourages deep vulnerability to gently make space for life to be truly lived.
An Advance Care Plan is an empowering guide to help those around you as they navigate the end of life path you wish to travel. End Notes provides an opportunity to have your say in how you would like your end of life to unfold, whether it is many years down the road or in the more imminent future, you can be awarded this gentle roadmap for an empowered death.
The essence of Doula care is to provide non-medical, non-judgemental support & guidance to individuals & families through times of critical, transformative life change. End of Life Doula's nurture, inform, support, guide, empower & comfort. We work with other caregivers & members of the medical team & foster self-determination in our clients by assisting them in gathering information & encouraging them to make informed choices that suit their needs. A Doula's support is focused on, & adapted to, the unique needs & requirements of each family served.
As non-medical care providers, End of Life Doula's do not perform clinical tasks (eg. monitor vital signs, administer medication). The Doula refrains from giving medical advice & from persuading clients to follow a specific course of action or treatment. The Doula refrains from imposing their own values & beliefs on the client. End of Life Doula's do not undermine the client's confidence or take importance over the role of other professionals & caregivers. Doula's may be present at the request of the client, but Doulas do not facilitate the medical aid in dying process
Though, most support occurs in the moment with intention & authenticity, listed below are a small sample of services offered.
I work with clients from all walks of life who are needing a compassionate presence & gentle guide. Despite the title, not all clients need to be at their end of life - I am available to support those who are experiencing grief & loss, who are feeling emotionally isolated & are in need of companionship, as well as those who have a desire to prepare for the future.
